CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

A New Beginning

Monday, May 15, 1724

She stood there holding the folded contract. Holding out his hand, Lusher took a step closer, “Madam, you cannot keep this paper.” The fingers of his hand curled indicating she should pass the contract to him, “Give it to me now!”

His face was flushed. She could see Lusher was agitated. He moved a half step closer. Tamsen realized he was about to make a grab for the folded paper. Calmly she put her hands behind her. “I intend to take this contract to my barrister. If he approves, I will sign.”

His breath was coming in short gasps, “This is no way to act Madam. I cannot permit you to keep the contract.” He stepped a pace closer but now was looking up at Tamsen, who was a full head taller. Still, he kept his hand out.

Tamsen looked down into the pale eyes of the barrister. She could see anxiety in his face as he reached out with both hands to grab her shoulders and turn her around. A large beefy hand slammed down on the barrister’s shoulder holding it in a vice grip.

Sheriff Henderson leaned close to Lusher’s ear, “Sir, I would not touch Mistress Ham,”

Lusher froze as if he was encased in ice then seemed to melt. His shoulders drooped, hands dropped to his sides and his head dipped. Head down he turned and walked several paces toward the window where Clement was reading. Tamsen saw the barrister was shaking. No one moved in the cabin. Tamsen stood with her hands behind her. Henderson waited near her.

After a period, the shoulders steadied. Lusher took several deep breaths, turned around and with a half bow, “Please excuse my actions Madam,” he took a breath and eyed them both, “I have behaved…ah…not in a professional manner…I assure you this will not happen again. I have asked for the contract and you have refused. Ah…I will not force you to give it to me. But…well…Mister Waldron will not be pleased. You may show the contract to whomever you wish.”

Tamsen returned his bow with a dip of her head, “Thank you Mister Lusher, I accept your apology.”

Turning to the Sheriff, Tamsen said, “Sheriff Henderson, I shall contact you when I am ready to discuss the contract. You can relay a message to Mister Lusher, can you not?”

Henderson half-smiled and moved his chin up and down, “Certainly Mistress Ham, that I can do.”

Lusher looked at the two, “Perhaps if we set a date…say June fifteenth…I will come again. Mistress, will that be agreeable?”

“The fifteenth of June in the late morning then.”

Then looking at Henderson he pointed to the door, “I believe, Sheriff, we have completed our business. Shall we take our leave sir?”

The Sheriff glanced at the Lusher and then at Tamsen, “Mistress Ham I thank you for your patience and the lovely tea and the delicious scones.”

After all that had happened, Tamsen had to smile at Henderson’s remark, “You are most welcome Sheriff.”

Still smiling, Henderson bowed, “We shall take our leave then Madam.
