CHAPTER ELEVEN

Belgrade, Serbia

The three of them sat around the table discussing the turn of events. Hawk fingered a glass of scotch as Karl ran down a list of what he had discovered and what they knew.

“Somehow Noskov knew what Desarae had planned which would indicate that he had someone on the inside.”

“Pretty self-explanatory,” Hawk said with a patronizing tone.

Anja glared at him.

Karl continued, “From what I could find from the few pictures that Jake took of the dead, as per usual, they were already dead by some years.”

“Again—”

“Jacob!” Anja snapped.

It was his turn to return the glare, but she remained unperturbed. “What?” he asked.

“Continue, Karl,” she said, ignoring the Brit.

“The vehicles they used were obviously stolen and when they were found by authorities, I was able to find out that they had been painted over before being used. No discernable fingerprints or anything like that.”

“Why not just burn them?” Hawk asked.

“They obviously thought they didn’t need to. Which was pure arrogance on their part.”

“Perhaps we need to consider the possibility that they have the police in their pockets and knew they didn’t have to,” Anja said.

“Correct. That was how Desarae was able to get Jake out of his predicament.”

“Have you been able to figure out where they went?” Hawk asked.

Karl shook his head. “No. My guess is that they’re out of the country by now. In, do the job, and extract once the mission’s complete.”

“At least Ilse will be safer now,” Hawk said. “Do we take Gray off her?”

“Not yet,” Anja replied. “Let’s see where this takes us.”

“So, we continue as planned?” Hawk asked.

“Yes. But while we’re doing that, I’ll see if I can find out anything on Noskov. I’ve had enough of fucking around. It’s time to end it.”

The Brit gave a nod. “Karl, I need to know all about Kaspar Haas and where he is residing.”

“I can do that. Is there a reason?”

“Yes, so I can kill him.”

“As good as any,” he said with a shrug.

“Explain, Jake,” Anja said.

“I’m going to take out their head of security,” Hawk explained. “Then while they’re dealing with that, I’m getting inside and stealing the account numbers to every red cent they have.”

“Can’t Karl do that?”

The tech shook his head. “No—well, yes, but only if you have a month to spare.”

“All right, let’s go to work. In the meantime, I have a flight to catch and an old friend to speak with.”
