CHAPTER ELEVEN

Djibouti, Two Weeks Later

“Anwar is dead,” Ilse said to Anja, taking a few steps around the room. “The Saudis found his body the day after the operation. It’s taken them all this time to identify him.”

“Well I guess we can cross him off our list. It looks like Medvedev has put things together and isn’t very forgiving.”

“Is there anything on Jake?” Anja asked.

Ilse shook her head. “Nothing I’m afraid. I hated leaving him there.”

Her commander nodded. They’d had to leave because things were getting too hot to stay. That was how they found themselves back in Djibouti. “We had no choice. All we can do is keep looking.”

“Yes, but I still feel helpless.”

“Let’s hope Thurston’s man on the ground can come up with something.” She paused and then asked, “Where are we on Polly White?”

Ilse winced. This was another direction they were copping heat from. “Not very far, I’m afraid. We’re trying to work out the movements of where she was sent, but we can’t get anything. We’re also still drawing heat from the British government through MI6.”

“Just keep reminding them that it wasn’t our fault. And we didn’t pay.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Do you still have contacts from the old days?”

Ilse nodded. “Some.”

“Reach out to them, find me something.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Popping his head through the doorway, Karl said, “I think I might have something.”

Anja nodded, beckoning him in to the room to give them an update. “I’m listening.”

“I’ve been trawling through hours and hours of security footage from around the tower, where Ansari lives. Tracing the comings and goings of different vehicles and it was hopeless. So I changed my search parameters. Long story short, three days after everything had cooled down, a black Range Rover left the building and drove out into the desert.”

“Where did it go?” asked Ilse.

Under his arm, Karl held a laptop. He placed it on the desk in front of them and opened it up. A few keystrokes later and a satellite picture appeared. “I’m not totally sure, but this might be the area in question.”

“What is it?”

“I think it is Saudi Arabia’s answer to a political prison. German intelligence has known about it for some time, so I reached out to a friend of mine who is still there. He confirmed my suspicions.”

“How is Ansari involved in it?” Anja asked.

“His brother.”

“Brother?”

“Stepbrother technically. His father had four wives. They gave him ten sons and five daughters. Ansari just happens to be the most infamous or what we would call the black sheep of the family.”

“So we need to get in there and have a look,” Ilse said, looking at her team mates for their concurrence.

“Someone does. I’m just not sure who.” Karl’s was nonplussed in his response.

Anja said, “I think I might know someone.”
