Every minute I am older than I have ever been and it has not scared me until this moment. I go up the long hill to visit his grave and I talk to Iris—my lovely, fierce daughter, Iris—on the phone every other day and I sit trying to feel when it will come. Some days are worse than others and I cannot even find the energy to close the curtains in the sitting room or go up the stairs to the bed that I have slept in for nearly fifty years. Iris sends postcards from Peru and Chile and Hawaii and Mexico. I feel the living beat of her even from so far away and I tell myself that I will never open the box again, I will never open it again for her. A van brings meals-on-wheels that all taste the same and that I am losing my appetite for. I move the box around the house hoping that I will forget where I last put it and that’ll be the end: under the bed, in the cupboard beneath the stairs, down at the bottom of the garden in the shed with the lawn mower. I forget where I have put my glasses and what day it is but I never forget where the box is. It has a weight I feel in my sleep, pressing down on my chest. And I know that, really, it will not be long before I open it again. After everything that has happened, after all I have done; I will look inside the box one more time. I will take everything from it. I will take and take and take and take until there is nothing left.
