This story first appeared in the June 2016 issue of Deep Magic. The story it begins with, about a man crawling through spiders, is a true story that happened to a friend of mine named Steve Anderson. Twig was inspired by a kobold I used in a D&D campaign with my kids. Twig had exactly half a hit point and was so weak and insignificant that just about any other being in the world could have taken him out. Yet my kids went to great lengths to keep him alive, and he became a family favorite. Seriously, if a monster I controlled went after Twig, my kids’ characters would literally jump in the way to get hit instead of letting Twig die. So this story, a stand-alone tale, has been a favorite of mine for a while. And I liked the idea behind the story that the true hero, despite everyone’s expectations, was the most powerless creature imaginable.
