There is an opportunity gap in education in America, and making progress to close this gap has been difficult and often erratic. What we are now starting to grasp, urgently and clearly, is that the opportunity gap is growing with every passing day, week, and month that children are not in school due to COVID. The acceleration of an increasingly unequal America over the last twenty years, as we discussed back in chapter 2, is being amplified by COVID in perhaps no greater place than public education.

One of the few entities that has made tangible progress to close the education achievement gap, at a measurable level and in a sustained way, is StriveTogether.10 Working to achieve racial and ethnic equity, StriveTogether knows that when a community prioritizes helping every child succeed, it brings us all one step closer to an equitable world. Across their national network, local partnerships are improving outcomes at major milestones: thirty-one of their communities in kindergarten readiness, forty-three in middle-grade math, and fifteen in employment readiness.

The complexity of the education system comes up many times in this book. The key lesson from someone like Jennifer Blatz, president and CEO of StriveTogether, is how she effectively manages and copes with complexity. As a leader, she must be clear about the intended results while navigating complexity.
