Carolina had eaten in some of Italyâs finest restaurants, but no meal had ever tasted as good as the stew of beef and mushrooms Duncan served up to her. It was comfort food reminiscent of the dishes fed to her by her mother when she was a child and feeling under the weather. The gravy was rich and thick, the meat succulent. But she was sure the growing warmth inside her was not merely down to the food. Whenever she was close to Neil and Duncan, she experienced an intense inner calm. At least she did when she allowed herself to. In the moments when she shut out her anxieties, she was content. But no matter how hard she tried, negative thoughts crept in. She couldnât accept this was the life fate had chosen for her. Surely sheâd been destined for greater things.
âYou want some more?â Duncan asked as she put the fork down on her empty plate.
âNo, Iâm full.â
In all honesty, she could manage another plate of the stew, but if the offer of a bath still stood, sheâd rather have a nice long soak.
âHow about that bath, then?â Duncan seemed to have read her mind.
âYes, please.â
Before she could rise from her seat, Duncan bent down and swept her up into his arms. She squealed in surprise, partly because sheâd not realized he could move so fast and clung onto his shoulders as he carried her upstairs. Although sheâd explored the house when the boys were at work, sheâd only glanced into their bedrooms. There wasnât much to see, just simple furniture and wallpaper that told her they hadnât decorated in the last ten years. She was surprised when Duncan took her into a large bathroom through a door leading off from his bedroom. If sheâd known this was here, she might have used it before now.
As he set her down on a thick white mat on the floor, Neil turned on the taps and checked the heat of the water.
âWe donât have bubble bath or anything like that.â Neil flashed her an apologetic look.
Duncanâs eyebrows knitted together as he frowned.
âWe need to get some,â Duncan said. âLassies like that sort of thing, donât they?â
âWell, I donât speak for all women,â Carolina said with a wry smile, âbut I do enjoy bubbles.â
âThen weâll buy you some.â
âAnd perhaps a bigger bath,â Carolina said, âso you can enjoy the bubbles with me.â
Duncanâs mouth dropped open as she waggled her eyebrows at him. Tired and achy as she was, she couldnât resist flirting a little. She was sure these men were used to taking the lead, but she was never going to be shy about expressing her own desires. She grinned as Duncan helped her strip off her t-shirt and leggings. The bath filled almost to the brim, Neil shut off the taps and stood back while his cousin helped Carolina into the water. She stretched her legs out in front of her. The water was hot, but not unbearably so. Closing her eyes, she rested her head on the edge of the tub.
