CHAPTER 12

Mia

I’m numb.

Every part of me tingles. Muffled thumping echoes in my ears. Some part of me understanding it’s my frantically beating heart I’m hearing, but nothing registers. My eyes land on Cooper and stay there. Every detail of his face becomes permanently embedded into my brain. I know as long as I focus on him, I’ll be fine.

“You’ve got to get up.” Cooper’s mouth moves but I’m not hearing his husky voice. If fact, I hear none of the chaos I’m certain surrounds me. There’s searing pain vibrating through my left shoulder. No telling if it’s dislocated or not. For all I know, it’s nothing more than a gash from the concrete Cooper slammed me into.

“Mia, get up.” I’m confused. Nothing works. It’s like my brain has disconnected from the rest of me. Every demand I give my body goes unanswered. Cooper brushes the hair away from my face and stares at me. “You’re in shock. You need to get up, get moving. Come on, now. You can do this.”

His head bobs as if reassuring me. All that’s going through my head is Heather. She was in the car. I saw her in the driver’s seat calling me from inside the car. The car is on fire.

Heat from the flames spills around me caressing the right side of my body. Cooper moves to the right, using his body to shield what remains of the car. Carefully, he slips one hand under my neck and head, the other under my legs. For a moment, I feel myself floating until I’m pressed against his body and whisked back inside.

The chaos is too much, and I bury my head into the nook of his arm to block out the world around me. Tears stream down my face as I focus on Cooper. He’s methodical at checking me out.

“Nothing looks broken. How are you feeling?” he asks. I give him a blank stare trying to comprehend what’s going on.

“My side hurts,” I answer assessing my injuries. He bobs his head.

“I’m sorry, that was my fault,” he says. “What else hurts?”

“My head.” As soon as I recognize it, a throbbing pain rams through my brain making me wonder if I’m concussed.

“We should get you to the hospital to make sure everything is okay on the inside,” he says as the wailing of police cars and ambulances and firetrucks scream down the street. I glance to the front doors and instantly Cooper cups his hands around my eyes blocking any view of the damage.

“You don’t need to see that,” he says drawing my attention back to him.

“You saved me.”

“It’s what you’re paying me to do,” he tells me.

The day drifts by in a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds. The wailing of sirens, the obsessive beeping of hospital monitors, the ringing of phones and muffled voices. It’s all too much for me. My brain shuts down and I slip from the world.

I’m not sure how long I’m out, but when my eyes finally open, everything is calm and quiet.
