Chapter Seventeen

Kate

“God damn it!” I woke up late. I had to be at work in thirty minutes, and I had never overslept a day in my life. The internship. Joey. Ohmigod. I needed to get the fuck up and moving. Today was the day to hear about the in-game entertainment proposals. I had too much riding on today. “Fuck! Shit!”

I rampaged through my closet, hoping to find a nice sundress that was appropriate and found a form-fitting black one I hadn’t wore since college. I threw on a headband, praying it covered my unwashed hair, and saw a letter placed in my bag but didn’t have time to read it. My legs had never moved that fast in my entire lifetime. I sprinted toward the stadium, sweat dripping down my arms, but the black fabric hid it. I forgot to smile at the security guard and ignored the daily question about the weather from Pete. The doorman had good intentions, but I had about five seconds to make the elevator. It dinged, the doors opening as I strode into the lobby. Thank God for small miracles.

“Morning, Kate! Wow, are you okay?” Claire gazed at me with wide eyes as I sprinted toward the doors. Shit. I panted from running.

“Fine. Overslept.”

“Hopefully due to Brody.”

I blushed in response, and she caught me. We’d stayed up making out all night like high schoolers, and it wasn’t until after two I’d sneaked into my room. We’d agreed to wait before sleeping together. It would be too soon. Too quick. When it went south, I wanted to enjoy it and drag it out. Because it would go south. Look at my track record... Only a month left of living with him, and then he’d lose interest.

Or so I’d told myself approximately one thousand times since last night.

“Don’t think I didn’t see that heavy make-out sesh on his car.” Claire announced it like she was talking about the weather.

“Shit.” I ran to her desk. “Do you see everything? Seriously?”

“Pretty much. Well, I went to go pee and glanced outside to see that, but I have to say, about damn time.”

“We aren’t official. I have no idea what we’re doing or what we are.” I paused. Unease pulsed deep in me. “I...uh...don’t want to tell people. Can you keep it between us, please?”

“Of course, girl. We’re friends. I might be a gossip but not with the important stuff. Just promise me you’ll keep me in the loop.”

“Will do. Thanks, Claire.”

“You bet, bitch. You look happy. It’s annoying.” She spun around in her chair to answer the phone, and I took that as my cue to head to my desk. After making a desperately needed cup of tea, I opened my email and remembered the letter I’d seen in my purse. Two large letters on the front of the envelope had me giggling.

Dearest KZ,

Would you do me the honor of blessing me with your presence this Friday evening? The event location is some swanky jazz place. The dress
