7.

Violet was still shaking as the noises below began to die down and subside. The snarls and growls that had echoed up to meet them there in their hideaway were slowly getting quieter and quieter.

Esme kissed her baby on the head and looked up to Violet and smiled.

“I know how crazy this all is,” she said as she looked across at her. “Because when I came to this town, I was in exactly the same position that you are…”

Stacey nodded her head as if to agree, and then she took a deep breath.

Stacey came and sat close to Violet, but Violet found herself instinctively shrinking away. Only that morning, her life had been so blissfully normal, and in twelve hours, it had been completely turned upside down. She had no idea what was happening around her, but she could feel the magic in the air.

This town wasn’t like anywhere else on Earth. Magic was oozing out of the ground beneath their feet, it was floating in the air around them, it was so powerful, as were all the people in it, and now Violet had found herself there and she was going to have to roll with it and do her best to survive.

She had found Thorn among all of this madness, but she could tell he was keeping something from her. He clearly had a secret, something bigger than she ever could imagine, and now that it was all beginning to unfold downstairs, she was going to have to find out the truth about him and about everyone else she had likely met while she had been in Lost Creek.

“What are they…,” she whispered as she looked up at Stacey.

Stacey smiled at her sadly and then cast a look at Esme.

“It’s better if Thorn tells you that for himself,” Esme whispered. “If Zeke hadn’t told me himself, I don’t think I would still be here.”

She smiled and cuddled the baby closer to her chest.

“He’s beautiful,” Violet said as she looked into the baby’s eyes. He had woken and was staring at her, his eyes a familiar blue and green.

“He’s important,” Esme whispered. And then she looked up to Violet and smiled.

Stacey got to her feet and moved over to the doorway and pressed her ear against it.

“They’re talking now,” she said. “Calmly, by the sounds of things.”

Esme seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and Violet rubbed her forehead. She just wanted Thorn back by her side. She just wanted him to tell her what the fuck was happening.

“Do you feel it?” Stacey said as she turned around and beamed at the two girls.

Esme looked into the air and Violet looked around as if she didn’t have a clue what they were both talking about. The girls were smiling widely, and tears were pricking their eyes.

“Yes,” Esme said. “It’s leaving.”

“What’s leaving?” Violet asked with a pout.

No one answered her, but within a few moments, she began to realize that the ice in the air was fading away and the temperature was beginning to get warmer.
