Cap.10-Killer

But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,

And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?” This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore—Merely this and nothing more. E.A.Poe

The woods were silent and dark. Night had fallen, under the trees, the shadows were so thick, it was almost impossible to see anything. They drove until Steve thought they were at about 1 mile from the motel.

Steve didn't dare to come closer, fearing the sound of the engine could be heard in the eerie silence of the road.

With their back rested on a tree, they waited for the night. Alina couldn't believe what she was about to do.

She looked at the Fiesta, parked on the side of the road, with the doors unlocked and the key in the ignition.

The getaway car.

Steve was not worried about car thieves. It was much more important for him they had the car ready to go in an instant.

While there was still a little light, Steve used Alina's makeup kit and her mascara to paint their faces, and now they looked like some deranged, unemployed clowns.

Alina wondered if this knife, she was holding in her palm was used to take someone's life.

Chances were it was, but Steve would never tell her.

Steve insisted she should repeat the motions of opening and closing the knife again and again, to get accustomed to it. She was not near as fast as him, but at least she was not dropping the knife anymore while opening it. In her jeans pocket, she felt the small can of pepper spray she took from the car's glove compartment. She felt a laugh rising in her throat. They were about to take on some drug smugglers with a pocket knife and pepper spray. She felt like in a crazy dream.

Besides her, she could hear Steve's quiet, rhythmic breath. How the hell could he sleep in a moment like this?! She was worried sick, yet he seemed to be more composed and relaxed than he was in the last days. The worse the situation was, the calmer he got. It was like danger was his drug of choice, something he needed to relax.

Alina asked herself again what this man she loved did before she met him. Cop?Soldier?Mercenary?Or something dark, more...
