Coaches, when facing problems with an athlete’s performance, resolve to consider and investigate the mental side and not just the technical or physical side. Technique is not always the answer to an athlete’s issues. Is technique going to help them when they struggle with a lack of confidence every time they’re faced with adversity? No. Technique is only as good as the mind behind it. And if the mind behind the technique is on shaky ground, technique loses every time. Even professional athletes falter due to their own thoughts, because the mental part of the game rules supreme.

Here are some solutions. Ask the athlete a series of questions to help them think about how their mental game might be interfering with their performance. Be sure to ask each athlete these questions privately and to always speak to them in a calm manner.

Ask, “How did it feel when…” questions, and then inquire as to how they would solve the issue themselves. They may not have a ready answer, and that’s okay. Next, ask them to spend time thinking about it, then follow-up with them the next day. When the athlete owns and implements the solution they come up with (even if you helped guide them to a more refined solution), their confidence will grow exponentially. Guide them through this process throughout the season.
