Chapter 11

The Knight

Linden brought in the chicken along with some ribs, fries and sauce. What more could one ask for… for supper?

With Angel’s feeding over, I took the baby from Alicia and sat holding her until she fell asleep. Alicia gently placed her in her cot. She was a sound sleeper. Now we adults could have our meal.

Linden owned the four-bedroom house and had had it in his mind to rent some of the rooms, but then Alicia changed everything for she needed her seclusion. It was very clear to me that he had purchased it unconsciously, but subconsciously for an unexpected arrival.

After supper, Linden decided to tell me about Alicia’s journey from the Convent.

“Sneakers is a very different person really, so different from the otherwise-known Sister Immaculata,” he said laughing.

Alicia smiled.

“In the beginning, she was quiet and contemplative – her only excursion was to visit the Church of Our Lady. She tried to hold onto her old cloistered way of life. Unfortunately, the church was only open on Sundays.”

Alicia laughed.

“It’s hard to believe that the house of the Lord suffers from burglars,” she remarked.

“Sneakers needed an escape, and the shop was a perfect hideaway for ‘a nun on the run’.” Linden said with a laugh.

“I love that expression,” I remarked.

“A lot of people want to get rid of old furniture – or sell it cheaply for much-needed cash.”

“It was a good idea, opening the shop, Linden,” I replied.

“Your meeting up with us has provided Sneakers with some breathing space, Lori, and given Angel some outdoor time.”

“In addition to all of the needed learning,” Alicia added.

“Heaven has worked it out well,” I replied.

I looked around the room. “Your home is so comfy and cosy, Linden.”

“The ‘Sneaker’s touch’,” he retorted.

“You’re not only into window dressing, Alicia – but home décor, too!” I said.

“I just love it, as you very well know, Lori!”

“Took to it like a duck to water – I recall the very first time I opened the door for her – the very quiet Sister Immaculata!”

“It must have been very difficult to adjust,” I commented.

“Yes – and awkward for her, pregnant, at the time – I gave her the room on the ground floor, it has lots of light and extra space.”

“My room is on the next floor.”

“Why don’t you show Lori around, Alicia?” Linden said.

“Great idea – follow me, Lori…”

I was given the grand tour of the first floor: the kitchen, her bedroom – the extra rooms… and the impressive upstairs bathrooms.

She stopped here and there pointing out the old pieces of furniture and where Linden had redecorated. She had saved the best for last – the small sanctuary room he had converted and decorated in baby blue. The candles upon a simple altar had made it an ideal place to contemplate. I was particularly impressed with the intricate details of a stained glass window.

“I would treasure this Sanctuary, Alicia.”

“It’s my ‘Holy Place’, Lori.”

“Linden never really had time for this house – he’s always on the go. He’s such a changed person now in the throes of renovating a new room for Angel next to mine.
