Muscle cells don’t need insulin’s help to take in glucose during exercise. Muscle contractions, those repeated squeezing and relaxing motions, encourage glucose to flow into the muscle cells. This means that the pancreas won’t have to pump out extra insulin in order to combat insulin resistance. Both glucose and insulin levels decrease when you exercise, and these new, healthier levels stay with you for some time even after you’ve finished exercising.

The benefits of exercise are not limited to the actual act of exercising. Exercise training increases the number of GLUT 4 transporters inside your muscle and fat cells. (When insulin binds to its specific receptors on the cell membranes, the GLUT 4 transporters move to the cell walls and escort blood glucose into the cells.) The more time you spend exercising, the more of these glucose transporters your body manufactures. As a result, your body will clear glucose from your bloodstream more efficiently, and excess insulin levels will decline.
