Some say that the warrior Wardark was born of a Giant and a mortal woman; others more credulous, that he was formed from the bones of Gauntspiders by an ancient sorcerer in the heart of the mountains of Moerland. The wise (of which there are few) and the scribes of the kings of civilised races to the south, record that Wardark was a reiver for the tribes of the North-western coasts in the little known Vandergan, a region of scattered fishing villages and small farmsteads bordering the endless swamps and fens of the uncharted world.

All people, wise, credulous, civilised or barbaric, reckon that Wardark rose to prominence in the last years of the age of the Gilded Swan at a time when the great sorcerers had faded to memory and humanity stood on the threshold of chaos.
