Chapter 18

THE NEXT hours went by in a blur. The officers took Mrs. Cooper into custody. We accompanied her, since she hadn’t provided us with an alibi for the time Dan Eller was murdered.

The officers investigating the case came to ask us questions. We had to surrender our audio recorder to the officers, which pissed me off beyond belief.

“You have your notes, so chill,” Parker advised me.

“I want the recorder back. You know how easily we forget details. I’d have liked to listen to it again and see what small hints she gave.” We stood in a corridor down the hall, waiting for someone to tell us whether we could go home or not.

Parker eyed the vending machine for several minutes until I lost my patience. “Will you just go and get yourself something? Your drooling is making the floor slippery.”

He stuck out his tongue at me but searched for some coins in his pockets and ambled over to the vending machine. He came back with a bag of M&M’s. I tried to keep the muscles in my neck loose. The thumping at my temples had wandered from there to right behind my forehead. I leaned my head against the cool wall, hoping for the pain to recede a bit.

Parker elbowed me in my ribs, which prompted me to look at him. He held up a can of Coke. I frowned at him. “I don’t think sugar will help with the headache.”

He sighed—rather dramatically—and without saying a word, he pressed the can against my temple. The icy coldness seeped through my skin, and I groaned in relief. I grabbed the can and crushed it against my forehead.

Parker took my arm and, seconds later, I sat on a plastic chair with my eyes closed. Parker’s M&M bag rustled occasionally as I waited for the thumping to lessen.

“You should take more painkillers,” Parker said in a low voice.

“They’re in the car.”

“I’ve never seen you suffer from such a bad headache.”

“Lack of sleep combined with lots of worry, I guess.”

“How did you get through work before when you were suffering like this?”

“I never had headaches like this before. This is the first time. God, this is so good,” I moaned as I rolled the can from one side of my forehead to the other.

Parker clasped a hand around my neck, and I winced. His fingers were cold and an unwelcome intrusion. I squirmed away from him, muttering, “Keep your hands to yourself.”

“Don’t go anywhere. I’ll get us out of here. You belong in bed.”

“I just have a headache,” I protested.

Parker’s shoes squeaked on the linoleum floor. I rubbed my left temple with my free hand. “We have to wait for Mrs. Cooper’s statement.”

“You don’t. You’re running a fever.”

I forced myself to open my eyes. Sure, my body hurt, but that was bound to happen when one fell into a cabinet. “Parker,” I said, “if you want to mother someone, do it with David.”

Parker snorted. “You’re running a fever. Probably caught it from Alex.”

“I never get sick.
