Chapter Six: A Good Reason

“The crab cakes are delicious,” Mindy says after taking a sip of her wine. We don’t often get the opportunity to dine out together, so when my wife told me that she wanted to go out tonight, I immediately called and reserved a table at Shay’s on the Lake.

“They really are good. I’m not one to normally like this sort of thing, either.” I like fish. That’s about all I like from the ocean. Lobster, crabs, shrimp, and other things that look too much to me like bugs are just not my thing. Normally. But I wanted to make my wife a little happier tonight, so I’m eating crab cakes.

“Thanks for taking me out,” she says with a smile on her face. “It’s been a tough week at work and I needed this time out with you.” Mindy’s face is glowing as she enjoys her meal at the nice restaurant. I feel a little guilty at this moment that I’ve not taken her out more often.

“You deserve it,” I reply. Fidgeting a little, I consider what Laney said to me earlier today at the office. I need to convince my wife that she can trust me if she gives in to the idea of the swingers party. There isn’t a woman around who could ever lure me into leaving Mindy and being only with her. No, this isn’t at all about a new relationship to me. I want to experience sex with other women while my wife has sex with other men. It would be fun to watch Mindy with Devin or even with Brenton. If only Brenton and his wife would agree.

Mindy looks at me and says, “You’re thinking about something. What is it?” Her sweet smile causes me to nod my head and blush a little. She knows me so well.

“Just something,” I say at first. “I don’t know where to begin or what to say to you.”

She leans forward after taking a drink of her wine. “You can talk to me about anything, sweetheart. You know that, right? We’re married, for better or for worse. Is it something at work that bothers you?” Mindy takes another bite of crab cake as she looks over at me.

My heart beats hard inside my chest as I sit up straight. Determined to man up to what I need to say, I tell her, “You know that I’ll always be faithful to you, right?”

There’s a confused look that crosses Mindy’s face as she puts her fork down on her plate. “Okay. Yes, I know that.” My wife is confused, as would I be if I were on the other end of this conversation.

“And you know that I would never do anything to cause you to see me as any less of the man you married, right?”

“Where’s this going?” she asks as her eyes bore into me. I feel compelled to look away for a moment, but then I turn my attention back to her.

Swallowing hard, I ask,
