The Airbnb had the worst sound insulation system in the world. No matter where Maldon went in the house, she could not escape the cacophony of noises combating each other near her unplugged, unfiltered eardrums. The ruckus of the dryer, the vomiting radiator, the planet Neptune flushing the toilet when he urinated, the refrigerator humming like a stupid grandfather, the coffee maker whistling like an incorrigible troublemaker, the wall clock with an unhandsome face that looked exactly like a constipated or bloated lily striking each second of its existence, the buzzing of the lawn mower in the far distance, the ringing sounds in her ears. Maldon tried to sit still and attempted to empty the columns of volumes from her consciousness through meditation, but each time she breathed it seemed as if she were blowing air into a balloon, the balloon being her sense of serenity, and all the breathing did was just make the size of the balloon bigger and bigger. Thus, meditation became an overinflated balloon waiting to pop. And, when it did pop, she threw Thích Nhất Hạnh in the air (the book she had been reading to calm herself) and bit her lips hard. The resilient, muted chickens each shut one of their eyes while trying to comb and scratch their wizened throats with each other’s nails as they surrendered to Maldon’s rage.
