Within each energy system, there are different sub-types of training and these generally give their names to the types of training that are common across most swimming programmes: aerobic sets, threshold sets, overload sets, lactate sets and so on. It is suggested that the simpler the system used, the better. Complicated zones and codified categories will do little to promote understanding by swimmers or coaches, and ultimately mean an overly complex system of planning, recording and monitoring.

See Fig 71 for a simple model of training emphasis. Details of training parameters such as volume, intensity and rest are given in sample sets.

Other forms of swimming, such as warming up and swimming down, are used in training, but these are not covered in detail here as there is little or no training effect to be gained from them. This is not to devalue their importance in any training programme. The following sections relate instead to the main focus areas.
