Chapter Eighteen

Aspen’s color faded from her cheeks as Leo moved closer to her in case her knees gave out and he had to catch her before she fell.

“I...” Aspen stammered, obviously taken by surprise. “We... My team has barely gotten started out here.” She swallowed, hard.

“You have no right to take your anger out on Aspen and Chad,” Leo said, trying to defend her. She was right. They had barely started and if they went back now he would be on his own...and she would be gone from his life forever.

“I’m not firing Chad,” Kitty countered. “I’m only firing her. She clearly isn’t capable. We heard she wasn’t even on her boat yesterday. How are they supposed to work as a team if they don’t even act like one?”

A sense of relief filled him. As angry as Kitty was, at least she didn’t seem to know anything about their moment in the woods. If she had, he would be facing all kinds of inquiries at work. This mother was out for blood, and she was going to take out anyone who got in her way—friend or foe.

“If you fire me,” Aspen said, sounding as though she had regained some amount of her resolve, “then Chad and our equipment will be leaving with me. Our fees for this week will still need to be paid.”

John put his hand on Kitty’s arm. “Look, we are already elbows deep in this. You’re upset and we can talk about that when we get back to our condo, but for right now let’s just let these good people get back to their job. They are our best chance of getting our Genie back.”

He felt the pressure of their hate. Even though they had relatively little information or answers, he could tell that this case could easily become one that would haunt him for the rest of his career—whether or not Genie was located. If she wasn’t, there would be all kinds of lawsuits from this family.

From here on out, he would have to tread carefully. Though they needed him, they weren’t on the same side, especially given the fact that they were willing to turn on the people they themselves had hired after they thought his team wasn’t doing their due diligence. No level of professional performance would assuage the terror and pain this family was feeling.

His heart went out to them. He felt for them, he really did, but he wished they could all be on the same page and working as a cohesive team instead of Kitty marking anyone who hadn’t found her daughter as an enemy.

“Mrs. Manos,” Leo said, lowering his voice and trying to sound as calm and soothing as possible, “Scott did tell me that you had a video that Genie sent to you. Apparently, it was a video of her and Scott fighting. You used it in order to help Genie press charges against Scott. Do you still have that video?”

“You better goddamn believe it,” Kitty snarled.

“Would you mind sharing that video with me?”

“Don’t you already have it? I used it to press the charges.
