“Haven’t heard from your guy in a while, huh?”

Sawyer and I were riding side by side to the training center for once, and I looked over at him in surprise. “What?”

“I said—”

“I heard what you said, I just don’t know why you’re asking.”

Sawyer shrugged as best he could and looked back at the path ahead of us. “I’m just curious. You’ve beaten me to the gym every day for the last two weeks, and I can hear your blender before I’ve even taken my morning shit.”

I made a disgusted noise and veered my bike at him briefly, making him laugh and put on a little more speed. “TMI, man. What the hell?”

“I’m just saying, you’ve been more on the proverbial ball than usual.”

“Nice. Thanks for the observation.” I rolled my eyes. “Did you forget that we have a race coming up? I have to get on the podium.”

“Are you kidding me?” Sawyer almost shouted. “You’re always on the goddamn podium. We always end up chasing you!”

“Yeah, well. I have a personal best to beat,” I retorted lamely.

“False modesty is a shitty pool to paddle in,” he said with a grin. “You’re 26. You’ll be on the Olympic team before you know it, even if you’re an old fart.”

“Hey!”

Sawyer’s laughter echoed in the early morning and I glowered at him. He wasn’t wrong; even if I did make the qualifying team, I would be the oldest of the bunch. Har de har har.

“But seriously, I can always tell when you’re on your own.”

I could feel my cheeks getting hot but I didn’t reply. I knew the walls in our apartments were thin, but I tried not to think about it very often.

“Very funny. You’re on fire today,” I said flatly.

“I’m serious. They always tell us that having a relationship while you’re training is the worst thing that can happen to an athlete. But I don’t think that was happening with you.”

I didn’t say anything, but I didn’t think I needed to. It was true; even if I only saw Lukas once in a while, I felt lighter when I was with him. I rode faster, swam harder; and when I ran, it felt like there were wings attached to my heels.

Sawyer didn’t say anything else, and we finished our ride to the gym in relative silence. Thanks to everything he’d said, Lukas was back on my mind. When Sawyer had locked up his bike and headed for the front doors, I hung back.

“I’ll be there in a minute. Tell Barr I’m right behind you,” I called after him. Sawyer didn’t turn; he just waved in my direction and pushed his way through the double doors. I pulled out my phone and broke my own rules.

My pillow doesn’t smell like you anymore. You’ve been away too long.
