Chapter Sixteen

The kitchen door handle rattled, rousing Rose from her intense study of the water usage report she’d pulled for the last six months. She was impressed with the detail it provided. It gave information about the usage of the entire park, all the way down to specific units. She could even see rates all the way down to the hour. When she got up with a hitch in her step from stiff legs, she realized she’d been sitting there for close to two hours. She pulled the door open, causing Gem to almost fall through, but Rose steadied her.

“Whoa! You’ve got your hands full. Let me take some of that,” Rose said, relieving Gem of the two boxes she was balancing under a plastic dish and a small stack of files.

“Thanks. I’m surprised you’re here,” Gem said, placing the dish and files on the kitchen table.

“Why’s that?”

“You’ve been spending a lot of time with Shia lately.”

“Not really. Does it seem like I do?”

“I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it.”

“Oh.” She should have anticipated Gem’s curiosity increasing after the chat they’d had last weekend. But she didn’t have a definition for what she and Shia were doing. It sounded cheap if she said they were just sleeping together. Whatever the in-between place they were in, she didn’t know how to describe it. And honestly, she really didn’t want to. Because if she did, she’d upset their balance.

“Do I sense a romance blossoming?”

The question ripped her from her thoughts. “It’s not like that.”

“The Ring camera seems to indicate otherwise. I get a notification when cars go down the cul-de-sac. I’ve been meaning to adjust the sensor so it doesn’t pick up the road traffic, but I haven’t, and I see you driving the cart past the house. You seem to be spending a lot of time on her end of the street.”

Rose felt like she’d been called to the principal’s office, but she shrugged and hoped it looked casual. God. She was starting to hate that word. “We’re friends.”

“Who might, perchance, be a little more than friends?” Gem winked.

She slid her hands down her face, not wanting to talk about it. Actually, she did want to talk about this casual thing that her heart didn’t think was casual at all. “It’s complicated. Yes, we’re friends who are more than friends. We’re keeping it casual.”

“Complicated but casual?” Gem said. “I don’t know how that works.”

Rose wanted to say she was trying to figure it out, too, but as much as she wanted to talk about it, she didn’t know how. “It works for us. We’re both busy. It’s easier this way.” She tapped the boxes she’d put on the table to redirect the conversation. “What’s in all these?”

“I stopped by Scripps this morning for Mikayla. Rich, the guy who helps maintain her seahorse tank, brought the wrong shrimp for the seahorses yesterday. I took them back and got the right ones before work since her car is still in the shop.
