CHAPTER THIRTEEN

As Emily walked closer, she quickly realized that none of the clothes belonged to her. They were all women’s clothing, but the assortment of blouses, skirts, and dresses must belong to one of the women staying at Eternal Rest that weekend.

Emily had closed the upstairs windows after airing the rooms, but as she looked up now, she could see that the window of the rearmost room on this side of the house was wide open. The screen was lying on the junipers directly below the window.

“Not cool!” Emily shouted. Maybe the ghost was trying to send another message, but all she felt in that moment was anger. These belonged to one of her guests, and now Emily would have to apologize and explain that an impetuous ghost had thrown them all out the window. Besides, she already knew the cemetery played some role in the ghost’s murder, so why point her in the direction of the cemetery again? Or, Emily speculated, maybe that wasn’t what the ghost was trying to communicate at all.

Emily got to work gathering up each item of clothing, pausing every now and then to huff out a breath angrily or to mumble, “This is ridiculous!” Thankfully, everything seemed to be clean and undamaged. Since the grass was still the brown, dead blades of winter, there were no grass stains on the white blouse. On a hunch, Emily also carefully searched the ground for jewelry. She wasn’t surprised to find a string of pearls and a few bracelets. Hopefully she wasn’t overlooking anything smaller.

Once the clothes were all neatly folded and stacked on the dining room table, Emily stomped into the hallway and shouted, “Do not interfere with my guests! You can talk to me, but not to them. They are off limits! But if you’re going to talk to me, you have to be more clear, because I don’t even know what you’re trying to tell me!”

Emily started at the sound of footsteps above her. Was the ghost actually going to respond? Then a man’s voice hesitatingly called, “Emily? Everything okay?”

Emily put her head in her hands and groaned as she felt the heat rising in her cheeks. She had completely forgotten that Nathan and Brianne were upstairs.

“Yes,” she called up. “Just laying some ground rules.”

Nathan came downstairs looking concerned. “You sounded really upset.”

Emily shrugged and gestured toward the dining room. “Go see what I just collected from the side yard.”

Nathan let out a whistle as he surveyed the clothes. “Somebody dumped clothes in your yard?”

“Somebody”—Emily emphasized the word—“threw them all out of a guest room window.”

“Why?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. They were sort of in a line leading toward the cemetery, but that could just be a coincidence.”

“We’d be happy to do a little investigating out there tomorrow. I can take my tape recorder. In fact, if you’ll let us in there tonight, we can try to get some photos or even video of the ghost.”

Emily thought for a while. It wasn’t a bad idea.
