Chapter 30

Over the next week, every lamb was attacked more than once, with only Tasha and Raven getting twice apiece. They were with us most of the time, which meant we could protect them without really making it look like we were impenetrable.

As I suspected, I caught updates in the notes for each special trainee. They’re required to escalate the attacks. No specific deadline was mentioned, yet the wording made it very, very obvious to me that my suspicion was accurate, and they were looking to have them all dead by New Years.

Two weeks away now.

I definitely found at least some of Henderson’s notes. I knew I had, yet it was cemented in place when I saw a reference to me and the girls possibly being too protective. There’s a note that they’ll hold off any proactive obstacle clearing. While also mentioning that one was already removed with the use of some medical support.

Lovely. No idea if he has what he took from me outlined anywhere. More than likely, yes, just not where I can find them. These aren’t his actual notes, they’re just ancillary and tracked in different places.

I seriously don’t like this.

Every time something happened, I was so, so close to calling Brianna again and seeing if she’s doing anything about this. It’s inanity to me that we allow this to happen, knowing that we’re not allowing it to happen. If they move too quicky or too poorly, the lambs will still die. It just won’t be with Henderson here.

At a guess, if he’s outed, they’ll make broader changes of professors here. Elsewhere as well. Then the trainees will…hmm, I’m not sure about that. Possibly remain here, but their special training will change pretty drastically. It’ll be more hidden. The command and control of the school will go into overdrive, with them probably putting something in place to really limit our curiosity on the off-chance one of us spilled the beans somehow on Henderson.

I’m praying that’s not the case. Obviously.

I’ve increased my stockpile of potions to thirty strength potions and twenty-five barrier potions. After the surge in growth when I made the bracelet, I haven’t been able to do it again. Or come anywhere near close to doing the same things that I did with glyphs or potions. It’s like I took a step backwards in some ways.

For a person raised like I was where I was expected to be perfect, you just know that any kind of setback burns at my soul like the hottest fires. I’m not used to not being able to grasp something quickly and run with it. Master it, even.

And yet I can’t do it with this.

My concentration gets broken by a huge tree limb flying out of the woods at me. It’s wrapped with magic and moving like a freight train. Just one that I can sidestep pretty easily. Had it been at full speed from the start, I might have gotten hit if I weren’t paying attention. Instead, I’m left standing on the trail as the branch disintegrates against one of the trees behind me.
