âGood morning, everyone,â Clive greeted the next day as he walked into the room that was used for the meeting he had to call for.
The old man had done more work in the past few days than he had done in the past half of the year, and it was beginning to take a toll on him, but Clive did not make a single complaint. The old man was made of tough stuff just like Marcusâ father; something that Marcus could not help but admire and hoped to emulate even as he grew older.
Clive had been just as calm two days before when the party he set out on a scouting mission had arrived and shared the news.
âThe city is pretty much deserted.â Owen, who had been a part of the scouting party, announced during the previous meeting. Marcus did not doubt that the rather rude man volunteered to join the team because he was trying to make a point.
The news seemed to deflate the men who were in attendance. Marcus suspected that some of them had taken his narration of the EMP as a hoax, but the report from the scouting party corroborated Marcusâ story.
âThere are signs of riots and chaos in the aftermath of whatever had happened there, and this means that we can forgo any hopes of trading with the city or anywhere else,â Owen added, sounding so contrite that it shocked Marcus, but he stayed quiet and continued observing the reports that were being given.
Now and then, Marcus would share a look with Clive, who had begun to see Marcus as the go-to person where cases of the world outside of the homestead were concerned. Which made sense seeing as Marcus had witnessed a lot of what happened as he and his family made their way to the homestead.
âSeeing as we have now returned to the primitive way of things with no hopes of having an enforcement of law and order, we need to put precautionary steps in place,â Clive announced, and soon, all the men at the meeting were lost in intense conversation on the best way to move forward.
That was several days ago and then there they were again, having another meeting. Marcus would be surprised if the men were not tired of being called in for one emergency or the other.
Hopefully, they donât sacrifice me and my family to appease some god, Marcus thought comically, but the truth was that their problems at camp began when he and his family drove that Humvee through its boundaries, and Marcus suspected that people secretly blamed him and his family for turning their lives upside down.
Ever since his first encounter with Owen, Marcus had been on edge and had become wary of the other men at the homestead. It was no secret that they did not like his presence, and he couldnât risk not being on guard.
"Marcus has brought something to my attention," Clive started after taking a seat. The air in the room was so rife with tension that one could almost touch it.
