Erin tried to hum the song she’d heard in her mind when she’d last managed to make contact with her guides. She’d barely gotten two notes out when her door creaked open. She made no attempt to stir from under the bed. This time she recognized Tracy’s shoes before she kneeled and pressed her face to the cold hard floor.

“Please,” Tracy mouthed. “Trust me.”

Erin stared at her pensively. Trust me? Can I trust you? Everything in this place is rife with dishonesty.

Every word she heard spoken dripped with bullshit. From the Mistress, to the captive humans, to the indoctrinated vampires, and who knows who else. All lies. Not even good or consistent ones at that. But Tracy did have a different air about her. There was a softness. An innocence. Maybe that’s why they use her on you. A sweet girl with a beautiful face to lull you into weakness. The voice was inside Erin’s mind, but it wasn’t her own. It made her feel insane and spurred her out of her hiding spot.

As soon as Erin was on her feet, Tracy embraced her. The act froze her in place.

“Trust me.”

Tracy’s words were a warm whisper against the shell of her ear. The contact was terrifying, but Erin hadn’t been touched by another person for so long, her body betrayed her. She hugged her back. She felt like a dog being soothed after it had been kicked. Jesus, I’ve got fucking Stockholm syndrome. Erin hated that the embrace was comforting. How much worse would this be if I trusted her? How much more can they take from me? They have my freedom and are working on my sanity. Erin thought of her mother. Should I trust her?

Tracy, her eyes huge and pleading, picked Erin up off the floor carefully and laid her on the bed. Erin forced herself to lay still. If she’d wanted to hurt you, she could have easily done it already. Tracy turned off the light, and Erin remained stiff as a board. She wanted to run.

It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. The light from the hallway offered a glow from beneath the door. It was enough for Erin to see Tracy’s face as it neared her own. Tracy gestured at the vent above them with her eyes. She knew they were being watched.

The bed whined under the added weight of Tracy’s body on the small single mattress. She pulled the covers over both their bodies and propped herself up on one elbow. Erin tried to make room for her, but there was nowhere for her to go. She was already on the edge.

“I won’t hurt you, but I need you to go along with me,” she whispered into Erin’s ear. Erin stilled and allowed the woman to situate herself on top of her.

The intimacy felt wrong, but she held her breath and allowed it. Tracy leaned in again, her knee slipping between Erin’s thighs. “You can’t refuse again. She will kill you and find some way to blame the Queen.
