I couldnât shift my mind from the game. I was constantly on edge any time Sean came near me, or if I looked and caught Adamâs knowing eyes, or caught Tessâs and Ellieâs raised brows of encouragement, and, oh God, did Ellie just give me a thumbs up? Subtle as a sledgehammer.
Chrisâs voice jolted me from my thoughts. âYou right to lock up tonight?â
He was another one to add to the mix. I still hadnât forgotten how angry I was at him for not telling me about my invite to Seanâs. What else had he been deciding on my behalf?
âWhere are you going?â I asked.
âA group of us are headed up to the Point, for old timesâ sake.â
âYeah, well, I guess I have no prior invitations so it looks like I can close.â I watched for a reaction, but he didnât even flinch.
âThanks, Amy, I owe you one.â He ruffled my hair in that annoying way boys do. I sneered as he went back into the main bar. I would still have words with him, but just not right now. I turned to see Sean standing before me, placing his empty glass on the bar.
âNice hair.â
I must have visibly flamed, as I cut him a searing look that only seemed to amuse him more.
I changed the subject, running my fingers through my hair. âSo, didnât get a lecture from Chris last night?â
Sean crossed his arms and leaned on the bar. âWhat about? Keeping you all to myself yesterday?â
It would have been a perfect opportunity to flirt back; it was an open invitation waiting for me to wipe that devilish grin off his face. Instead, I fought the flame of crimson and settled for my usual snarky comeback.
âNot brave enough to say that in front of Chris, though, are you?â
âHa! Chris doesnât scare me. It wouldnât be the first time weâve come to blows.â
âReally?â I asked, surprised.
Sean looked on reflectively. âYear Ten, we had a duel in the school ground over Sharnie Maynard.â
âOver a chick?â I asked. âNow why doesnât that surprise me? Who won?â
âNeither. It turns out she had the hots for Toby all along.â
âOh dear!â
He shook his head. âBroke my heart.â
âWell, if itâs any consolation, my best friend had the massive hots for you.â
Sean stilled, his brows furrowing. âWho?â
I sighed. âTammy Maskala.â
The blankness never left his face, just like I suspected all those years ago: he didnât even know she existed.
I rolled my eyes. âAbout so high, mousey brown hair, big blue eyes, lurking in the shadows every place you went.â
âDonât know her.â
âWell, trust me, she loved you!â
âIs that so? So whatâs Tammy up to these days?â
Something unexpected jolted in the pit of my stomach, a sudden urge to shut up about Tammy.
I shrugged. âI think sheâs married.â
Liar!
âProbably got a couple of kids.â
Liar!
âProbably doesnât even live here anymore.â
Liar! Liar! Liar!
As far as I knew, Tammy had never moved away and I had never heard of her mythical marriage or children, but for some utterly disturbing reason I didnât want Sean asking questions about her.
