“You gonna check that?” Graham asked around a mouthful of noodles.

I glanced down at my phone. “Nah, it’s just an email. I’m sure it’s nothing.”

“Check it, you never know. Maybe you won the lottery.”

“I think I’d need to have bought a ticket first,” I laughed, but I swiped my phone on and pulled up my email. “Oh.”

“What is it?” Graham took a final bite and set the carton of Chinese food he was eating out of down on the coffee table. He stretched out in the loveseat, putting his arms behind his head. Even with a stray noodle hanging out of his mouth, he was sexy.

“My friend Tegan’s lawyer.” I scanned the email quickly. “They want me to fly back to New York to give testimony in the trial, about the guy who stole money from us.”

“Wow, that’s awesome. Soon?”

“I guess?” I set the phone back down, making a face. “I don’t know. I don’t have to deal with it now, though, I can look at it tomorrow.”

“But don’t keep them waiting. The sooner you get this wrapped up, the sooner you get your money back.”

“Yeah, I guess so.” I frowned for a second, thinking about that. Obviously, getting my savings back was a good thing. But I was still strangely unexcited by the prospect, even a week after the phone call with Adam when I’d first found out they wanted me to fly back.

I glanced back at Graham. Once I got my money back, I’d have to make a decision. Stay in Maple Springs, or go back to New York? I didn’t even know how to begin to make that choice.

It felt way too early, too soon, to say I wanted to stay here. New York was where my life was, where I’d made a home. My friends, like Adam and Tegan, were all there. I couldn’t really be considering leaving that all behind, could I? And yet, the thought of not getting to see Graham on a daily basis anymore also seemed inconceivable.

Graham nudged my foot with his, his bright purple and blue striped socks looking comical sticking out from under the boring uniform khakis he had on. “Penny for your thoughts?”

I shrugged. “I dunno. Just thinking about timing and stuff. It’s weird how things work out, you know? But whatever, it’s all still in the future, I don’t have to worry about it now.”

“I suppose it is,” Graham laughed. “That’s the thing about time, though. You look at what seems far in the future now and you imagine it going one way. You know, ask someone to tell you where they’ll be in a year and they have some idea. But then you look back at where you were a year ago and you could never have predicted ending up where you are now.”

I nudged him back with my foot. “You mean you didn’t know a year ago that you’d be dating – I’m sorry, hanging out with – Joey’s little brother? I’m hurt.”

“I mean, there was
