Another shiver raced down Marlene’s back, and she leaned against the dusty gardening shed wall. It had been a week since Bose had brought her home from the dance, and every day her thoughts had bounced back and forth between worrying about Willa and craving Bose’s touch. Each kept her in a state of confusion for differing reasons.

It would be so easy to fall for Bose. Ten years had passed, and she now realized she’d never gotten over him. Through the years, when she’d wanted to really punish herself, she’d imagined what her life would have been like if she’d ignored Gran’s advice and stayed with him.

Her grandmother’s words echoed through the shed like the woman was standing before her. “Your good looks only last a little while, girl. Use ‘em or lose ‘em. I’m counting on you.”

Even though her grandmother had reminded her daily to marry for money, Marlene had made up her mind to accept Bose’s proposal. They’d get by somehow. Love was more important than money, after all.

It had been a decade, but the memory was as clear as if it were happening today. Gran spent over a week trying to convince Marlene marrying Bose was the wrong thing to do, but in the end, grudgingly gave her blessing.

Two days later, she’d sat with her grandmother, waiting for a follow-up doctor’s appointment, making a list of what she’d need for the wedding. She didn’t need much. It would be simple, only her grandmother, Uncle Jeb, and Bose’s parents. Maybe they’d take a couple of days and go to Reno for a honeymoon.

Those plans disappeared with the doctor’s first words. Advanced kidney cancer. Without insurance, the cost of treatment was unmanageable.

In record time, she’d found the first man who she’d thought had money and convinced him she was the love of his life.

Micah had even agreed to have Gran move onto the ranch.

Her grandmother fought them with every withered muscle in her body over the move. For some reason, she wanted to stay in her small, rundown home even though she’d pushed Marlene to marry up.

Only a week after their wedding, Micah had helped her clean out the ranch’s master bedroom so Gran could have her privacy, but the morning of the move, her grandmother had had a stroke. She’d lingered for six days in the hospital before giving in to death.

Out of habit, Marlene raised her hands to push her hair behind her ears. It took a moment to remember she had no long curls left. This morning, in a spur of the moment decision, she’d taken the scissors and cut her hair pixie short. It was a little uneven, but her waves hid most of the mistakes.

Sheer vanity had prevented her from ever cutting her hair before. But, if she was serious about changing her life, her appearance was a good place to start. Besides, getting rid of her long hair cut twenty minutes off her morning schedule, and she kind of liked the feeling of freedom.
