The next morning, Poe and I went to the animal shelter together. The weight of deciding about the Crypton Clothes contract was dragging on the edge of my mind, but I didn’t dwell on it. I wanted to soak up every second of the time I had with Poe.

I felt my heart fall into my stomach when we walked through the shelter doors and I saw Addie, the shelter manager, sitting at the reception desk crying. My first thought was that Brutus had died during the night, and Addie was there to tell me in person.

She loved that dog as much as I did, but she already had ten rescues and two fosters. Her dream was to have a farm someday where she could care for even more rescue dogs and cats, but it was going to take her a long time to save the money on the salary the county paid her to run the shelter.

“Addie, what’s wrong?” I asked and rushed to her side.

“I’m so sorry, Blake. I wanted to pull myself together before you got here, but I’ve failed at that.”

“What is it? Is it Brutus? Did something happen to one of the animals?”

“No, it’s not that. Brutus is fine, for now,” she said and began sobbing again.

“For now? Addie, what do you mean?” I asked frantically.

“Blake, the county cut our funding for the next fiscal year. If we can’t find a way to make up the shortfall, we’ll have to restrict how many animals we can take in,” she said with a pitiful sob.

“We can’t do that. If we have to restrict the intake, that means…” I didn’t even want to say it.

“It means we’ll have to give up our no-kill designation. We’ll have to tell people to take their animals to the pound too, instead of keeping them here until we can find a foster or rescue. We won’t be able to pay medical costs for special needs fosters anymore. Most of those animals, and any new ones that come in, will be put down because of being unadoptable.” The way she said unadoptable made my heart hurt. “No animal is unadoptable, Blake. This is sickening. The county board is cutting our funding to pay for their own special interest projects. I’m just so mad and sad.”

I knew what I had to do. The contract with Crypton Clothes would help make up the financial shortfall at Paws and Claws shelter. I wouldn’t be able to donate as much time, but I could help keep the shelter no-kill for at least another year.
