It was raining now, of course. Hard, and cold. That's all they ever got around here to pass for winter was cold rain. A drenching chilliness. Natalie followed the covered walkway from Mason's apartment to the next building over, and then stood there, looking at the rain falling, feeling miserable.

She had no idea why she wasn't still up there enjoying Mason's company. They'd no doubt be a good friend, even if they weren't available or interested. And she needed all the good trans friends she could find.

She just got so flustered, wondering who Mason wanted to impress with their cookies that she helped with. Which was so foolish. She had offered to help. And she wasn't even a jealous person! Her head just got so turned around, when Mason did her nails, and they sat so close, she could feel the warmth of their breath, and...

She gingerly tested a nail, and it felt dry. And she couldn't bear to stand here any longer. The stop she needed had an intact shelter. She'd sprint there and she'd be fine.

Ten minutes later, she was at the bus stop, alone, shivering, but the bus was nowhere to be found. Hopefully it was only late, and she hadn't missed it running a bit too early. Her hair was damp and her hoodie shoulders and pant leg hems were soaked, but aside from that, she was mostly dry. Only wet enough to make the chill in the air feel far too cold.

She was miserable, though. She had to figure out what to do with these feelings for Mason - how to get past them, or ignore them, or be brave enough to bring them up with Mason. Something. She couldn't keep doing this. It made her chest too tight.

Just then, she thought she heard her name. She looked both ways down the street, but the rain was still coming down, and had turned the few people out on the streets into soggy specters.

She definitely heard her name again, though, and looked back toward Mason's apartment.

Oh God. Mason was jogging this way, bundled in a wet hoodie, something tucked under his arm.

Natalie worked on breathing. She couldn't manage to move. She just waited there.

Mason trudged to the bus stop shelter, and stopped underneath it. They didn't move for a minute, and Natalie simply looked at their face... noticing how the water beaded and dripped from their awesome cheekbones and chin.

"These are for you," they said, handing her the package. She looked closer, and discovered it was a Christmas tin wrapped in several layers of plastic wrap.

"The cookies," they continued, looking at the tin. "They were always for you. I wanted to... keep you longer, when you dropped off the book yesterday. I think you're amazing. I love everything you say in class. You're beautiful. And I'm not very good at this. I am, in fact, really weird at this. But... you don't have to talk to me again... if you're uncomfortable or you don't want to. I just kept.
