Chapter Five

The music pumping over the loudspeakers was just the motivation Karon needed to keep up her flow on the treadmill. Six miles and going strong. She had hardly broken a sweat. Karon was in the zone.

Working out had never felt so rewarding. Neither had gym day. For the first time Karon had something to gossip with her friends about, and they were enthralled by her new and improved sex life.

Seven miles and she wasn’t ready to quit. Today was turning out to be a new record kind of a day. It was amazing how a little sex, okay who was she kidding, a lot of sex, got a girl’s motor going.

“I hate you both,” Zoya panted, giving up the pretense of even walking anymore.

The plump brunette was leaning on the machine as if it were a lifeline. “The one freaking lunch date I miss in three years, Karon decides to come out of the freak closet.”

“I’m not a freak.” Karon grinned, although some of the things she and Tristan had done over the last three weeks were definitely putting her in line for runner-up. “I’m a liberated woman in the prime of my sexual peak.”

“Amen.” Jacque threw her arms up in the air comically. “Preach, sister.”

“Look at her, she’s glowing for Pete’s sake.” Wiping her brow, Zoya watched Karon in awe. “So did you finish the list?”

“I might have, if Tristan didn’t keep insisting on adding to it.”

“Adding to it?” Hitting the stop button on the machine, Jacque grasped her sides as she tried to catch her breath. “I didn’t think we left anything out.”

Ending her session as well, Karon stepped down, wiping the handles with her towel for the next person. “Apparently we did.”

“Well go ‘head then,” teased Jacque.

“Wait.” Zoya looked between Jacque and Karon like they had lost their collective minds. “Am I the only person who thinks this is going to end badly?”

Jacque and Karon turned twin expressions of annoyance in Zoya’s direction, causing her to throw her hands up in mock surrender. Karon didn’t want to hear about things ending, badly or otherwise. For the first time she wasn’t putting her career first.

She was going to enjoy it, whether she was supposed to or not.

“All I’m saying is, you can’t base a relationship on a booty call.”

“Maybe she doesn’t want a relationship.”

“Of course she does, Jacque, she’s not like you.”

“What the heck does that mean?”

Karon stifled a chuckle. She knew what Zoya meant, but like always, her friend spoke first and thought second. “Oh shut up, you know what I meant. Karon is more cautious and too kindhearted for her own good. I mean, who else would have put up with Walter for that long?”

Rolling her eyes, Jacque held up her hand, signaling for Zoya to shut up. “Move on, there’s nothing wrong with not thinking things out.”

Zoya batted Jacque’s hand with her damp towel. “That should be your motto.”

“It is.”

“Ladies.” Karon shook her head in amusement. After seven years of friendship, it was amusing how well defined their roles were.
