Yaan woke in the dark to hushed voices. His first thought was that he and Kel were being robbed—although by who and how they’d gotten in he couldn’t fathom.

“Shhh.”

“I am ‘shhh!’”

The door clicked shut. “Oh, Kel, why did you have to put him in my bed?”

“Because it used to be my bed. It was actually mine longer than it’s been yours.”

Everything flooded back. It would’ve been better if it had been burglars.

“Wait, where are you going?” Kel’s voice again.

“Just to change.”

“You can change here.”

“I can’t, there’s a strange man—”

“It’s dark and he’s facing the other way! And asleep!”

“Probably not anymore…”

Yaan didn’t move; he wouldn’t be a helpful presence in the conversation, especially if Beni had decided to heed Kel’s push to change in the room. After a bit of rustling and shuffling, Kel whispered, “Good night,” and the girls replied in kind. The mattress sank down behind Yaan, and he felt Kel stretch out beside him. A moment later Kel’s hand perched on his shoulder, and his voice came soft in Yaan’s ear. “Yaan?”

Finally Yaan let himself move, rolling over to face Kel. “I’m awake,” he whispered back.

“Sorry.”

“No, it’s fine. I should be apologizing, I’m the intruder…”

“No, you don’t have to. Trayna just likes to complain.”

Kel’s voice rose on the last part, and from the other bed came a muffled, “I heard that!”

“Do you want anything to eat?” Kel asked. The sliver of light stealing in through a gap in the curtains illuminated one of his eyes and part of his cheek, leaving the rest of his face invisible. “I didn’t want to wake you earlier…”

“It’s fine, I’ll wait till morning.”

“All right.” The line of light slid away as Kel moved closer, his lips finding Yaan’s, his hand resting on Yaan’s cheek. Yaan’s hand rose to reciprocate.

“I hear that, too!”

Yaan broke the kiss immediately as Kel stifled a laugh. He shifted, nestling his head into the pillow and pressing his forehead against Yaan’s. How was he still so cheerful, so at ease? They had lost everything, even their privacy.

He slid an arm around Kel, holding him close. Well. Not quite everything.
