The weather was growing ever fiercer,

The Neva swelled and roared,

Boiling up and steaming like a cauldron,

And suddenly, in a frenzy, like a wild beast,

It rushed upon the city…*

But this explosion of unbounded, indomitable, primeval energy is nevertheless held back at the very brink by the hand of that same Peter. No matter how the waves seethe, the summit remains unshakable, and the Idol resides there, galloping all over the place without even budging a finger, with fiery blood in his bronze body.

Notice that Peter rides over the Neva without going anywhere; the flood has the fiery nature of Peter and his steed; and the steed is all of Russia, Poetry itself, bolting in a frenzy toward the sky and at the same time frozen in a vortex of water, fire, and metal merged into one:
