Chapter 4

I woke up to banging—and not the sexual kind. The someone-is-crazy-and-on-the-other-side-of-that-door kind. The I-stayed-up-too-late-and-drank-too-much-and-ate-crap kind. It was an evil combination.

Especially when I added in the strange body sleeping next to me in an unfamiliar hotel room.

“Fucking hell! What is that noise?” Travis groaned and slammed his pillow over his head.

“It’s your room, you tell me.”

He sat straight up and stared at me like he’d forgotten I was there. Which, in all honesty, he probably had. “What time is it?”

I grabbed my phone and glanced at the time as the really unnecessary banging continued. “Ten.”

When I glanced back at Travis he had a strangely soft—almost shy—look on his face. “Guess that isn’t too early, then. Is it?”

I shook my head and hopped out of bed, disappearing into the bathroom with my clothes, as Travis yanked on his sweatpants and headed for the door. “What?” I heard him bark as I closed the bathroom door.

There was the vague sound of two voices as I relieved myself and checked my appearance in the mirror. It wasn’t pretty. Day old makeup that had been fucked and slept on was never pretty. The last dregs of lipstick clung to the very edges of my lips making me look like a lip-liner crazed leftover from the eighties. My mascara had left black shadows all over my eyes and cheekbones. I wasn’t wearing much eye makeup, but what was left was smudged. And then there were the bloodshot eyes and pale skin.

I needed a glass of water, and probably a monster breakfast of hangover food. Pancakes and sausage were sounding pretty good.

“Kristen?” Travis banged on the bathroom door.

I stuck my tongue out at him. “I’ll be out in a sec. Hold your horses.”

“Umm…” I heard the hesitation, even from the other side of the door. Something was wrong.

I yanked open the door to find Travis leaned against the doorframe and his hair pushed up in crazy angles. His manager, John, was standing by the window and Toni was by the door.

Something was super wrong. “What’s going on?”

Travis shook his head and looked down at the ground. “Good things, apparently.”

“What?” I looked at Toni for help. I was so confused. If it was good, why was Travis looking so weird?

Toni grinned and bit her lip. “So, last night was kind of a huge success. Someone in the audience took video of you singing your new song, plus all the songs you and Travis did together, and posted them up on YouTube. You’ve already gone viral, just since last night. People are sharing your video like crazy. They love the two of you together.”

I looked around the room at John and then finally at Travis, who still wasn’t looking at me. “They aren’t telling you everything.” He grumbled.

“What do you mean?” How was my new song getting lots of free advertising a bad thing?

“The kicker,” Travis let out a breath and ran his hand through his hair before finally looking at me. “The kicker, is a video of you and me making out, and then disappearing down a hallway.
