Stephane, wearing Jean-Michel's dressing gown, sat in the small kitchen eating yogurt. When he had finished that he dipped his croissant into a bowl of hot coffee and ate noisily. Jean-Michel, already dressed, sat opposite Stephane smoking.

“I'll get dressed as soon as I've finished,” Stephane said between mouthfuls of hot coffee. “Then I'll be off. Do you have to go to work?”

Jean-Michel glanced at his watch. It was 8.30am and he didn't need to put in a appearance at the laboratory where he worked as a biologist for at least another hour.

“There's no hurry,” he said, and pulled on his cigarette blowing a blue cloud into the air. “Where are you going today?”

Stephane stopped drinking his coffee, a look of surprise on his face. “Me? Oh I don't go anywhere. Perhaps I'll go to the pictures this afternoon. I like Westerns.”

“Is that what you do every day?”

“Yes, when I've got enough money. But I buy food first, and if I've got enough left I go to the cinema.”

Jean-Michel felt in his pocket and produced twenty-five francs. He pushed the three notes over to Stephane.

“Go to the cinema by all means, and then come back here. I shall return at about 4.30. I'll take you out to dinner.”

Stephane pocketed the twenty-five francs, which he considered quite a lot in view of the fact that Jean-Michel was offering to take him out to a meal that night. This was the first time that anyone had suggested that he return, although when he thought about it Jean-Michel had not suggested he return, but told him to do so. There was a subtle difference, and Stephane felt a twinge of resentment. He wanted to come back to this comfortable apartment, but he didn't like being ordered to do anything. All his life he had been ordered to do things, and he'd had enough. Jean-Michel, however, appeared to be adept at reading his thoughts.

“Perhaps I expressed myself badly,” he said courteously. “If you would like to return I would be pleased to see you. If the idea doesn't appeal to you, then you can say so now and I will not wait for you.”

Stephane finished his coffee, and getting up walked in bare feet towards the bedroom and his clothes.

“I'll be back,” he said over his shoulder.

Jean-Michel blew another cloud of smoke into the air, and a thoughtful smile crossed his face...
