Never before have I wanted to use Gnarl for kindling so much as I do right now. âWhat do you mean Jeno has gone to Veszprem?â
Gnarl spreads his hands. âJanos is waylaid and couldnât deliver, so Jenoâs on his route down the Zala River.â
âYouâve sent him too far.â I resist the urge to slap some sense into Gnarl as it would be too late to help anyway. âAnd by now, he has an entire nightâs head start on me.â
âWhere he goes is safe. Thereâs no need to follow. Either have some faith or go home and wallow.â
Argh. That crazy, doggerel-spouting bundle of sticks. I clench my fists lest I snap him like the twig he is. âJeno is just a fledgling with no one to guide him. Heâs too young to handle a mail route that spreads over half of Hungary all by himself.â
Gnarl glowers and tuts at me. âHeâs eager to prove his worth. For that, you must give him a wider berth.â
I blow out an irritated breath. âTell me the entire route from the beginning.â
âSouth over the ridges to Veszprem, then down to the lake, from there to the Zala and back in a shake.â
âIt had better be a shake, Gnarl, orââ I stop short of threatening him. Gnarl is my friend, and this isnât his fault. Well, it is his fault, but itâs also his job to keep the post running, so I canât exactly blame him. Even though I want to.
âOr what, little kitty? Youâll beat me to bits? Wonât that be a pity?â
âDonât. Tempt. Me.â I growl out the words one by one, shift, and run off without saying good-bye.
As much as I want to head straight to Veszprem and catch up to Jeno, Gnarl is annoyingly correct. Itâs not my place. Jeno chose to go, and I ought to respect that. Give him the freedom to do his job. Besides, my own responsibilities beckon. Iâm needed in Pest.
So I retrace my steps, and if I fume and rant on the return trip, itâs no skin off my nose. Jeno couldnât have known Gnarl would ask him to pick up Janosâs route. Still, he gave me his word heâd hurry back.
Why does it feel like a promise broken?
