Chapter 24
I FROZE AND LUKE WAS abruptly two-legged, kneeling and holding me upright even though I didnât need assistance. âHonor! What happened? Where are you hurt?â
His concern surged down the mate bond the same way my horror must have travelled in the opposite direction. I hadnât realized I could suck energy away from someone so quickly or so thoroughly. Had I killed my friend?
I nosed at Arthurâs face, relieved to feel the tickle of exhaling breath. Not dead. Alive.
As best I could tell, Arthur was only sleeping. On the other hand, waves of worry rolled off my partner while the burnt electricity from the crowd worsened. I grabbed for words, but found none available to send back down our mate bond.
Instead, I tried to shift upward and join Luke in humanity. The shifting part was successful, but my muscles were liquid, my brain muzzy. I tilted, and this time Luke caught me as I fell.
âThis is over.â Lukeâs voice was so quiet I was surprised anyone in the pack could hear him. But his spark of compulsion carried despite the low volume. Even with my eyes closed, I sensed the shifters who had been pressing closer for a better vantage point draw back.
Not a good idea, I reminded Luke. Every compulsion makes Ruthâs role as alpha that much more tenuous.
Only, the words didnât have enough oomph to travel. Instead, I lay in my mateâs arms, frozen and unable to argue as he proceeded to protect me while disobeying his sisterâs overt commands.
âThere will be no pack in-fighting,â Luke continued. âYou donât have to like each other, but youâll at least pretend to. If you have a problem with woelfin or anything else, take it up with me.â
I pried my eyes open and was granted a close-up view of Lukeâs knee even as his free hand settled into my hair. His fingers picked through my tangles as he spoke to his pack mates, the gentleness of his touch contrasting with the hardness of his tone.
âThere will be no viewing of the heir tonight,â he continued. âIf you want to see himâif you want to see themâyouâll sign up for a babysitting slot in the cloud.â
Frowning, I considered the possibility that my addled brain was playing tricks on me. Luke thought these wild, ferocious werewolves were going to scurry home to their computers and cell phones so they could fill out an online form giving them a chance to take care of newborn babies?
And yet...footsteps pounded away from us. My view of fur and naked legs opened out into a dark, empty lawn.
I blinked. I might never understand the skinless.
âNow, shift,â Luke continued, his tone descending back into alpha compulsion. âThen tell me what was so important that it brought you to blows.â
