HOPPER’S CABIN

HAWKINS, INDIANA

Hopper stood and, under the pretense of having a stretch, moved from the table and did a circuit around the den. In reality, although the break was welcome, the memory of the store robbery the Vipers had forced him into was not a pretty one, and while he had kept the finer detail out of the story for El, there were a few inescapable and unpleasant facts that he knew she would ask about and that he’d had to deal with. He stopped over by the TV and linked his hands behind his head, his back to the red table and the girl still sitting at it.

“It’s okay,” said El.

Hopper dropped his arms and turned around.

“What?”

El shuffled around in her chair. “Not your fault.”

Hopper frowned and shook his head, but El continued.

“They made you…” she said, her hands on the top of the chair as she twisted around to look at Hopper. “Papa made me…Sometimes…”

Hopper moved back to the table and sat down. El righted herself in the chair but kept her eyes on the table.

“Sometimes what, kid?”

“Felt like it…wasn’t me. Like I was…watching.” She looked up. “Like the men.”

“What men?”

“Behind the mirror.”

Hopper’s heart fluttered in his chest, and, as he reached over and ruffled El’s hair, he felt hot, wet tears gathering under his eyes.

“What happened next?” asked El.

Hopper paused and looked at El, a bit uncertain. She looked up at him expectantly, completely unfazed by the dark memory she’d just shared.

“Well,” said Hopper, rubbing his face. “Next, I met the Vipers and their leader.”

At this, El’s eyes went wide.

“You met Saint John?”

“I did.”

“Okay,” said El, getting comfortable again. “I’m ready.”
