Stone reappeared, under an invisibility spell, on the far side of the hospital’s parking lot. He checked to make sure nobody was around, then shimmered back to view and took off at a jog toward the building. His thin-soled dress shoes weren’t built for running, but he was more concerned with getting to Verity and Izzy as quickly as possible.

The nurse at the front desk gave him an odd look as he swept in, puffing, and inquired about Izzy. Keeping a suspicious eye on him the whole time, she called someone. She listened to the other party, looked him up and down, and said, “Yes, that’s him.”

Their response seemed to surprise her, but her expression changed from suspicious to efficiently helpful as she hung up. “Dr. Stone?”

“That’s me, yes.”

“Sorry for the delay—we’re not supposed to let anyone unauthorized in. Agent Freeman is in the intensive-care unit. You can’t see her now, but your friend and some of her associates are waiting for you in conference room 1019. Just through the doors, at the end of the hall before the turn.”

“Thank you.” Stone was already moving, his heart beating faster. They hadn’t gone through all that effort to rescue Izzy only to lose her now.
