The wood was dark. Weak, wet from our swim in the river, and from the pouring rain, we could barely see where we were going. The bridge was behind us, but we couldn’t see it through the trees. We couldn’t see if the ECU was still fighting Kilo and his wolves, or if any or both of them were coming after us. We had taken a leap, risked it all with a fall, and we had survived. It was the miracle I’d been hoping for.

But now, after fifteen minutes of running—or trying to—I didn’t know how much longer we could go until we fell. We were barely standing. Protecting ourselves for so long from those bullets had taken almost all our energy. Swimming and running were taking care of what was left pretty quickly.

Then, Grover stopped. He fell to his knees as if he’d just been attacked, then hit the ground hard. As if she’d been waiting for this moment all her life, Fallon sat down, too. So did Lynn.

So did Ax.

I couldn’t sit. It was too complicated a function for my body in those moments. Like Grover, I simply let go and fell.

“Let’s just…let’s just sleep for a while,” Fallon whispered. Curling into a fetal position, she waited for no reply before closing her eyes.

A part of me, some part I was having trouble hearing, insisted that this was a bad idea. A very bad idea, for whatever reason. But how could it be when sleep sounded like heaven? Heaven couldn’t be bad, could it? And my eyes had already closed. Nobody said anything. Nobody moved again.

We all fell asleep in the woods.

We all woke up in a room.
