Chapter 16

“There you are.”

Charlie looked up to see Noah walking through the back door of the safe house. Automatically, she tipped her head up from her seated position at the garden table for his kiss. Firm lips captured her mouth in a kiss that was borderline indecent before he pulled away and looked down at the table. “What are you working on?”

In the past seven days since the altercation at the club with Cavendish, things between her and Noah had changed. They hadn’t gone back to how they were before, but they were spending every night together. The sex was off-the-charts amazing but it was the open honesty between them that had changed.

In between searching for her sister, they spent every second together talking about the past, about their childhoods, but never about the future and she knew that was her fault.

Every time Noah tried she shut it down, too terrified he might decide he couldn’t take a risk on her again. He’d been wonderful in not pushing her and she loved him for it. She’d always love him.

“Charl?”

“Oh, sorry. Yeah. I was going through my sister’s social media again to see if I could find anything.”

“And?”

“Nothing.”

“Well, I do have some news, nothing big, but Watchdog found the parent company of the clinic and it does tie back to Project Cradle.”

“Wow, so this is huge.”

“It looks like it’s a bigger operation than we thought. There are CIA officers involved, high-level criminals, government officials, and the fact it spans the globe is a worry too. Bás and Valentina are headed to the USA to meet with some of our contacts there and find out what they know. Duchess will take over as lead for now.”

“Isn’t she undercover with the Elysian Casino group?”

“She is, so she has to be careful.”

Charlie sighed and let her hands fall to her lap. “God, what a mess.”

Warm fingers brushed her neck as Noah sat beside her. “I know, but we’ll figure it out together.”

Looking up she saw his blue eyes on her and her throat clogged. “Why are you so good to me?”

“You know why.”

“But I shot you.”

His lips twitched and he nodded. “That you did, and I only forgot to put the bin out one time.”

A laugh burst from her, but it was half-hearted at best. “Be serious, Noah.”

“I know you only did it to protect me. I heard you talking to Duchess in the gym.”

Charlie stilled, bile racing up her throat and she shot to her feet, her hand over her mouth as she ran to the edge of the garden and lost the contents of her stomach.

Retching until her throat hurt, she felt soft hands scoop her hair away from her face and felt a gentle hand on her back.

“You okay, Charl?”

Nodding, she wiped her mouth on her sleeve and straightened, her heart racing from being sick and the news he knew. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Noah raised a brow. “That I knew?”

“Yes.”

“Initially, I was trying to process it.”

“And after?”

Charlie crossed her arms over her middle as if she could protect herself from more pain.
