Chapter Six

Carly swallowed back bile and pressed against the wall opposite her bed. Who would put a dead rat in her bed? She stared at the slip of paper hanging from a knife blade, her hand over her mouth.

“What is it?” Stetson barged into her room.

Pointing, Carly raced for the bathroom and lost her last meal into the toilet. When she’d finished, she rinsed her mouth, doused her face with cold water, and shook off the shock before joining Stetson. Seconds later, Wyatt joined them and the three of them stared at the carcass on Carly’s pillow.

Wyatt pulled a rubber glove from his pocket, donned it and removed the knife, reading the note out loud. “Turn over the file or the consequences will be worse.” He frowned. “Stetson, Carly never leaves your sight.” He turned on a bootheel and marched from the room, taking the knife and note with him. A breath later, he peered around the corner. “Oh, and wrap that rat in the sheet and bring it to my office.”

Carly shuddered and tossed the other blankets to the floor. They’d all have to washed in very hot water before she’d use them again.

“Let me. You look shaken up.” Stetson pulled the sheet corners from the bed and tied the entire thing into a large hobo-style sack.

“I am shaken up, Stetson. Someone put a dead rat in my bed.” She planted her hands on her hips and stared at the mattress. No blood. “At least the rat was dead before being put there.”

He gave her a crooked smile. “Thank God for small favors, right? Come on. There’s another bedroom you can use. It connects to mine with a bathroom.”

Too close. She’d not get a wink of sleep knowing he slept a few feet away. “I’ll get some of my things.”

She grabbed an outfit for the next day, some toiletries, and waited for Stetson to lift his macabre sack and lead the way. “Whose room did it used to be?”

“Wyatt’s. But now he lives in a cottage away from the main house. We don’t have to move out when we get married, but he wanted to. Said as the eldest, he couldn’t live with his mother forever.”

“And you?”

He tossed a glance over his shoulder. “I plan on staying in this house until I die. Mom means the world to me. Anyone I marry will have to agree.”

Anyone who fell in love with Stetson would probably agree with anything he wanted. The man was not only handsome, but kind, funny, everything a girl could want for a husband. Despite her prior convictions about not getting romantically involved, Carly found herself wishing Stetson would go through with the kiss he kept threatening her with.

“Here you go.” Stetson dropped the sheet wrapped rat in the hall and opened the door to a large room decorated with a western theme. Definitely a masculine room.

“Thank you.” She placed her folded clothes on a nearby chair and stared at Stetson. Now what? She tilted her head. “Goodnight?”

“Oh, right.
