Chapter fourteen

Bones to the Latecomers

Jack

After Kincaid leaves my office, I breathe a sigh of relief. At least I managed that—for now.

I glance down at my phone and smile to see three more sexually suggestive text messages from Audrey. This woman is goddamn magic. After some back and forth about our date tonight, she said her preference was for me to cook dinner. I’m certain she’ll want to talk about Bill’s case—she’s dying to get a scoop—but I’ll do my best to distract her.

After concluding my last meeting for the day, I close my laptop and head out to the grocery store, making a mental list of ingredients. As I wander the aisles, my mind drifts to Audrey—her insatiable appetite for the truth, her sharp wit, her curves that seem to go on forever. I can’t wait to have her in my kitchen, watching her saunter around as I prepare our meal.

When I arrive at my apartment, I get to work. A simple pasta dish with garlic and shrimp feels right—something that won’t take too long to prepare. As I make the final preparation, put on some smooth jazz, and light a few candles, my mind drifts to other things I’d like to do with Audrey.

My thoughts are interrupted by a knock on my door. I smooth down my shirt and take a deep breath before answering.

Audrey stands on the other side, a coy smile on her face. I hope she’s got on those stockings and garter belt with no panties underneath that sexy black dress like she’s teased all day.

“Mm, something smells delicious,” she purrs as she walks past me into the kitchen. “I hope you don’t mind me bringing a bottle of wine.”

I follow her, admiring the sway of her hips as she moves. “Not at all.” My eyes are still fixed on her body. “I think it’ll make the meal even better.”

“I’m sure it will.” She grins, reaching into her purse and pulling out a bottle of red wine. “But first, let’s get started on the main course.”

We spend the next hour cooking and chatting, the sexual tension between us growing with every passing minute. I can feel her eyes on me as I chop vegetables and sauté shrimp, and I know she can see the bulge in my pants growing. I try to keep my focus on the food, but every time I catch a glimpse of her cleavage or her shapely legs, my mind starts to wander again.

Finally, we sit down to eat. As we savor the flavors, our conversation turns to Bill’s case as I predicted it would. Audrey asks me if any theories about who could have killed him have come to me, and I tell her no and hope she discontinues the line of conversation. Of course, she doesn’t.

“Well, I did some digging of my own.” She leans in closer to me. “And I found out that someone from Kincaid Corp was into some shady dealings. In fact, there may have even been secret meetings with a lawyer—as in, your friend Bill.
