As noted above, Stephen Hawking’s personal life has been mired in controversy over the past several years. And in 2009, after completing a hectic lecture tour of the United States, Hawking became seriously ill. Thankfully, he made a full recovery and returned to his position at Cambridge.

But these setbacks have not stopped Hawking from grappling with radical new scientific challenges. Chief among his latest theories: the idea that evolution itself is changing. In a lecture entitled “Life in the Universe,” Hawking discussed the notion that humanity has gone through a new phase of evolution, which he calls “an external transmission phase.”

In the lecture, Hawking pointed out that biological evolution is a slow and painstaking process, taking millions of years. But he noted that humanity has now arrived at the point where we can easily store and share knowledge, and that this is a form of evolution in itself:

“Some people would use the term evolution only for the internally transmitted genetic material, and would object to it being applied to information handed down externally. But I think that is too narrow a view. We are more than just our genes.”
