Chapter Twenty-Nine

Irene

This was surreal, every second of it. On our walk to the Bamboo Grove, I actually pinched the skin of my arm a few times to make sure I wasn’t having some sort of anxiety-dream-slash-fantasy.

I was always on edge around Liana, but right now I felt like there was some kind of electric field between the two of us that would snap and burst into sparks if I wasn’t careful. And I had to be careful, because there were parts of me that wanted nothing more than that.

So, as ridiculous as it was, I suggested the silly questions. I’d try anything to rid us of this tension. I handed one card to her and kept one for myself.

Liana read them over and tilted her head. “These sound like they’re from an online dating compatibility quiz.”

I shifted nervously and frowned down at my list of questions. Yeah, they kind of did. The people who put this auction together must’ve had a really bad sense of humor. It would’ve been funny if I was just having dinner with a friend; I could even deal with a coworker, since I really did think it was important for us all to be comfortable around each other.

But with Liana...

This felt way too much like a date. When we were together, I was always hyper-aware of her. I couldn’t help it. I was afraid that every move I made might betray how attracted to her I was, and who knew how she’d use that against me. Now, with this added veneer of romance, I was even more nervous that I’d slip up.

Maybe I could use this to my advantage. I knew Liana liked to bake, but that didn’t mesh with my idea of her as a woman of mystery. Would getting a few more pieces of the puzzle strip away whatever made her so inscrutable? It might make her easier to work with.

Or it might backfire and make me even more crazy for her.

“It’ll make conversation, at least,” I offered. Surely she didn’t want the whole meal to pass in awkward silence either.

Liana shrugged and picked up a gyoza with her chopsticks. She didn’t object or agree, so I decided to just go for it.

“So, first question... What did you want to be when you grew up?” I asked.

Liana chewed thoughtfully. “I wanted to go to the Olympics.”

That wasn’t quite the answer I’d been expecting. “There’s nothing to say you can’t sometime in the future,” I said. The consulting fee she was being paid was likely high. “If it’s a childhood dream, why not make it happen?”

Liana sipped her drink without looking at me. “I mean, I wanted to compete in the Olympics.”

My eyes opened wide. That was a surprise. “Really? In what sport?

“Gymnastics.”

“Wow.” I could see that. Liana had a small build, but if those few glimpses of her bare legs and arms I’d gotten told me anything, she had plenty of muscle. Not to mention the fact that she was apparently some kind of super spy, and in movies they were always bendy.
