ADMIRAL’S QUARTERS, USS LEXINGTON

Fitch was alone with his thoughts. He idly wondered what his classmate “Jack” Fletcher was doing on board Yorktown, just three miles away. Although they were the same age and same class, Fletcher was senior to Fitch, a quirk of the old system of graduation lineal numbers: the higher your class standing, the more senior your number. Fitch had served well and steadily but hadn’t yet earned any distinguished hardware (like Fletcher’s Medal of Honor and Navy Cross). The two men were friends; still, Fitch worried about Fletcher, who was not known for his aggressiveness. And he didn’t have anything close to Fitch’s experience in carrier command and aircraft carrier operations.
