Ryder hadn’t seen Caroline since he’d taken lunch to her office on Monday. That was two days ago. He’d been in town for a whole week now and he knew a little bit about her schedule. He happened to know she worked late on Mondays and Wednesdays. But it was after eight and she should be home soon. He and Finn were going to grill some steaks and he thought maybe she’d be hungry after working so long, that maybe she might want to join them.

He kept an eye peeled to the front door, watching for headlights.

“You got it bad for your neighbor lady?” Finn asked.

“What are you talking about?”

“I mean the past half hour you’ve been staring at the front door and out the window, as if you’re expecting someone. Are you expecting someone?”

“No.” Ryder grabbed two beers from the fridge, passed one to Finn. Oh hell. Just be honest. “I just thought if you didn’t mind maybe I’d invite Caroline to join us for dinner.”

“Why would I mind?”

Ryder shrugged.

“Unless you want me to disappear.”

“No. It’s just dinner. Not a big deal. And if you’d rather she didn’t come that’s okay too.” He pretended not to notice the headlights as they passed his house and stopped in the drive next door. He popped the cap on his beer, took a swig, tried to look relaxed instead of being on edge like he really was.

“I think your girlfriend’s home.”

“Is she?” Then Ryder frowned when he realized the trap Finn had set. “She’s not my girlfriend.”

“So you say.”

“I’ll be right back.” He set his beer down on the counter and hurried to the door. “Caroline!” he shouted as he sprinted across the yard.

She pressed the button to lock her doors on the van and looked up at him. “Hi.”

“I know it’s late notice but would you like to join Finn and me for dinner? I was going to throw a few steaks on the grill.”

“Sure. Can you give me ten minutes? I need to feed the animals, let the dogs out and change my clothes. Can I bring anything? Wine?”

“No. You have bad taste in wine.” Rather than act offended she grinned at him. “It’s nothing fancy. I’ll fire up the grill and see you in a few minutes then.” He turned to leave then spun back around. Closing the distance between them he reached for her, took her face in his hands and pulled her in for a kiss. She returned his kiss with reckless abandon. He soon realized if they didn’t stop he’d end up carrying her inside her house and fucking her.

Regretfully, he broke away. “I’ll see you in a few.”
