Jesse saw them sitting at the bench over by the information desk. They were facing away from him. He watched as Mysti leaned over to say something to his daughter, his chest contracting.

The scene was a little too familiar. Like something out of the not-so-long-ago past that hadn’t quite blurred completely away.

It had to be what he’d just gone through. The paramedics had managed to get Larry’s heart started again, but as their eyes had met, they’d confirmed his sense that the situation wasn’t good. He wasn’t even sure the older man was going to survive at this point. And that look in Larry’s son’s eyes...

Devastation.

What he’d felt when Kandid had died, even though he hadn’t loved her anymore, if indeed he ever truly had.

What he’d felt when Mysti had said she was leaving Forgotten Point to join the army, and never coming back.

As if sensing someone was behind her, the woman in question turned slightly, eyes widening when she saw him. “How is he?”

“He’s hanging on, but...”

What could he say? He couldn’t very well say the man probably wasn’t going to make it in front of his young daughter. Right now she deserved to have a world that was happy and carefree. Sally had been too young to fully understand what had happened to her mother, but that wouldn’t always be the case. A time was coming all too soon when she would realize things were not always beautiful. That people left and never came back, whether it was from dying or by virtue of moving away.

Except Mysti had come back. But only for a while.

Jesse wasn’t sure right now how he really felt about that. It had been so much easier when he couldn’t see her right in front of him, when there was no hope of her return.

And now that there was?

Well, she was a reminder of what he’d almost done in behaving exactly like his father. That night had shaken his world. He never wanted to feel that unsure of himself ever again.

Jesse was realistic enough to know that Mysti had the power to make him feel exactly like that all over again. Just by her presence.

Except there was no longer the possibility of cheating on Kandid, because she was no longer alive. And if Mysti had been here when he and his wife had been going through their marital problems? Would he have turned to Mysti for comfort?

God, he hoped he would have done the right thing. The honorable thing.

But there was no way of knowing for sure. Because Mysti had not been in town during that time. And even without her presence he had failed Kandid as a husband.

“Daddy, Mysti bought me apple juice.”

“I can see that.” He looked at the surgeon and mouthed thank you.

She nodded in response. “I left your boat tied to the dock. I wasn’t sure what else to do with it.”

“Yeah, sorry for leaving you with all of that. I didn’t want to try to transfer Larry over to our boat in the condition he was in.
