The girls were already back at the stables waiting anxiously when Issie and Stardust arrived. “Ohmygod! Issie! Are you OK?” Stella didn’t wait for her friend to speak. “We heard what Rupert said. Would Hester really get rid of Stardust? She wouldn’t, would she? Oh, this is awful!”

“I know,” Issie agreed. Even though Stardust had terrified her with her runaway antics, she still didn’t want the palomino to get fired from the film. “I wish there was something we could do, but Aunty Hess has made her mind up.”

“Do you know why Stardust bolted?” Kate asked.

“I don’t know.” Issie shook her head.

“It’s like this whole film is cursed or something,” Stella said, looking spooked.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Stella! Stardust bolted, that’s all!” Issie snapped.

“Oh yeah?” Stella said. “Well, what about Angelique’s foot? Disasters like that don’t usually happen on movie sets!”

“But that’s just it!” Issie said. “Stardust and I weren’t even close to Angelique and she just collapsed on the ground and started yelling about how we’d broken her foot. It was all an act. We didn’t do it!”

“So why would Angelique pretend to be hurt?” Kate wondered.

“To get out of making the film of course!” Stella replied. “She said in the changing rooms that she wanted to get out of making this movie–no matter what!”

“So she’s willing to pretend she’s broken her foot? That sounds—” The girls stopped speaking abruptly as the tack-room door swung open and Natasha walked in.

“Oh,” she said frostily, “I see. Another one of your secret meetings I suppose. All the gang together as usual–except me.” She turned around to leave.

“Natasha!” Issie called after her. “It’s not like that.”

“Yes it is,” Natasha turned on her. “You’ve got your little gang. You never include me in anything. It doesn’t matter how much I try, I’ll never be a part of it. Well, fine, I don’t want to be anyway!” And with that she flounced back out of the door, slamming it behind her.

Issie groaned. “Should I go after her?”

“And say what?” Stella said. “She’s right. We don’t want her in the gang.”

“Stella!” Issie said. “Did it ever occur to you that Natasha is such a total cow to us because she feels left out and wants to be our friend, but we never include her?”

“No,” Stella said flatly. “No. It really didn’t.”
